Water Power Plant Aqueduct

Rotheau, Austria

Description:
Originally built in the 1920s, the concrete bridge spanning a small creek to supply a water power plant was in serious need of repair. Water leakage was reported in several areas of the bridge; sealing the structure against water penetration and to protect the embedded reinforcement steel from corrosion was a priority. 

Products Used:
The water flow was stopped to repair the inside of the bridge and compromised concrete areas were renewed. The whole area was treated with two coats of PENETRON and the bridge was filled with water again. Within a few days all leaks were completely sealed.

The Boulevard

Cape Town, South Africa

Description:
Already a recognizable landmark at the gateway to Cape Town and with 36,000m2 of high-quality office space, The Boulevard incorporates seven individual units all constructed on a podium with three basements to provide one of the highest parking ratios in Cape Town (with 4 bays/100m2 ). The facility also includes restaurants and coffee shops.

About 8,100m3 of concrete on the “The Boulevard” site are protected against water ingress by PENETRON ADMIX.

Russia

Description:
Sayano Shushenskaya is the largest hydroelectric power station (6,400 megawatt capacity) in Russia with the third largest dam (240m high and 900m wide) in the world. The renovation project faced a typical problem: severe deterioration of the steel reinforcements in the concrete.

Products Used:
The PENETRON System was used to repair the powerhouse cable sections, the reinforced concrete elements throughout the project and various other sections, including the flood-gates.

Nuclear Waste DNR Plant

Savannah River, GA, USA

Description:
The nuclear waste facility at the Savannah River Site (SRS) is currently used to consolidate and store nuclear materials in two of the SRS reactor buildings. The Department of Energy required a product that could effectively waterproof their processing slab and be applied quickly and easily.

PENETRON PLUS was used to waterproof a fast-tracked concrete pour at the Savannah River Site nuclear materials processing facility.

Novo-Sverdlovskaya Power Station

Yekaterinburg, Russia

Description:
The Novo-Sverdlovskaya Power Station, located near Yekaterinburg, is the newest and highest capacity station in the region: natural gas is used to produce 1,856 billion kilowatts annually. 

Products Used:
PENETRON materials were used to waterproof the basement, waterside pump station, shower stalls, shelter, cable floor (2,500m²), cooling tower chamber and the pump station for oil and utility waste.

Long Tan Hydroelectric Dam

Guangxi Province, China

Description:
With a height of 216.5m (710 ft.), a crest length of 830.5m (2725 ft.) and a normal water level of 400m (1312 ft.), the Long Tan hydroelectric dam is the world's largest roller-compacted concrete (RCC) dam. Located at the upper reaches of Jiangshui River in China’s Guangxi Province, the dam provides 18.7 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually to the Pearl River delta between Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Products Used:
PENETRON was successfully applied as a waterproofing coating to ensure the impermeability of the entire upper side of the dam and to increase the anti-slide stability of the RCC layer's surface.

Kariba Dam

Zimbabwe

Description:
Originally completed in 1960, the 282km² Kariba Dam has a wall 128m high and half a mile long and is one of the largest dams in the world. Damming Africa's fourth largest river (the Zambezi River), it provides electricity to Zambia and Zimbabwe and also supports a thriving local fishing industry. 

Products Used:
The PENETRON System was used to remedy water leakage and the thoroughly moist concrete areas of the dam; this includes parts of the main dam structure and adjacent areas and the utility rooms.

Hellenic Petroleum Company

Elefsina, Greece

Description:

The expansion of the new refinery unit of Hellenic Petroleum Company included an underground network to collect and recirculate residual products from the refinery, and the construction and sealing/repairing of 1,000 reinforced concrete wells (total volume: 4,000m3). The reinforced concrete was fully sealed and protected from corrosion, concrete carbonation and chloride penetration to deal with the area’s corrosive ground water. An additional requirement was protection against chemical attack from the high chemical load of the plants’ refined by-products.

Products Used:

PENETRON ADMIX was specified for all waterproofing and protection requirements.  PENETRON GROUT and PENEBAR swellable-type waterstops were used to waterproof, seal and anchor the connection between the concrete wells and metal pipes (ø 100-800mm).

ENEL Hydroelectric Power Plant

Andonno (Cueno), Italy

Description:

ENEL is a global energy provider and Italy’s largest power company; the power plant in Andonno is one of the company’s most important. PENETRON products helped restore a 2km section of the main tunnel by waterproofing a total area of 24,000m2, including the joints and tunnel walls.

Products Used:

The tunnel walls were treated with PENETRON, which was applied by spray application. The joints and cracks were treated with PENECRETE MORTAR with an additional amount of PENETRON in liquid form that was injected by resin to ensure a deep penetration of the PENETRON crystals into the concrete structure where cracks had damaged the surface. This method ensures a further tightening of the concrete matrix, preventing water ingress through joints and cracks.

Duke Energy / Marshall Steam Station

Terrell/Catawba, NC, USA

Description:
A coal-fired power generating facility, the Marshall Steam Station is Duke Energy’s second largest coal facility and generates enough electricity to power approximately 2 million homes. A new coal conveyor system was installed to help reduce corrosive runoff and groundwater contamination from stockpiled coal. This included a tunnel with an above grade concrete funnel to feed the coal to an underground precast concrete box.

Products Used:
PENETRON ADMIX, PENETRON and PENECRETE MORTAR were used to construct the base slabs, funnel and precast tunnel sections (about 4,600 cubic yards). PENETRON’s ability to lower permeability and increase durability of the concrete in an aggressive groundwater environment was a key reason for its use in this project.
